The Executive Board (EB) of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) will meet in Lausanne on 10 and 11 December 2008.  The meetings will be followed by the announcement of the Host City of the very first Winter Youth Olympic Games on Friday 12 December.

The EB will hear the reports from the IOC commissions and directors, as well as updates on preparations for the forthcoming Olympic Games in Vancouver, London and Sochi, and the 2010 Youth Olympic Games in Singapore. The EB is expected to take decisions on the three pending doping cases from the Beijing Games and to be updated on ongoing disciplinary procedures. Also on the agenda: the Olympic Congress and the sports programme of the 2010 Youth Olympic Games.

The announcement will take place at the IOC Headquarters in Vidy, and will be broadcast live on www.olympic.org from 11 a.m. to 12.15 p.m. GMT.

With increasing focus on the environment for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, the 7th World Conference on Sport and the Environment next month in Beijing will bring together an unprecedented range of experts. They will focus on knowledge to benefit the host city plus future Game’s bids, National Olympic Committees, International Federations, partners and sporting goods companies. Scheduled for the 25th to 27th October, the Conference will mark the first time a representative from Greenpeace will join government and non-government specialists at the biennial conference.  Beijing 2008 will also be the first time the International Olympic Committee has endorsed an independent environmental review of an Olympic Games. 

The conference’s theme, “From Plan to Action”, will involve three plenary sessions including heads of environment and sustainability initiatives for the Vancouver 2010 and London 2012 Olympic Games. A parallel session will include the president of the 2010 FIFA World Cup organising committee from South Africa.  All will exchange information and best practices with their Beijing 2008 counterparts, as well as learn from Greenpeace China’s experience working with sport event organisers.  

“Holding this year’s world conference in Beijing with such a remarkable group of participants is highly significant,” said Jacques Rogge, President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which will host the conference with the Beijing 2008 Organising Committee (BOCOG) in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). “The programme clearly shows the high level of dedication and cooperation that sport has to create a healthy and sustainable environment, and that Beijing 2008 is a catalyst for overcoming universal challenges.”

Programme topics and resources at the conference will include environment assessment reports from UNEP and BOCOG on Beijing 2008 Games preparations designed to overcome environmental challenges. Other resources will include the final sustainability report from the Turin Games, while a Sochi 2014 representative will offer an advance look at implementing environment-related bid promises. One of the plenary sessions will be dedicated to Olympic Games corporate partners showing how they adhere to “green Olympics” practices.

The Centennial Olympic Congress, Congress of Unity, held in Paris in 1994, recognized the importance of the environment and sustainable development, which led to the inclusion of a paragraph in the Olympic Charter. The IOC has acknowledged its particular responsibility in terms of promoting sustainable development, and regards the environment as the third dimension of Olympism, alongside sport and culture. This led to its decision in 1995 to create a Sport and Environment Commission. Its role is to advise the IOC Executive Board on what policy the IOC and Olympic Movement should adopt in terms of environmental protection and support for sustainable development and, through its members, supports the IOC programmes and activities in this field. The Commission is chaired by Pál Schmitt and is composed of IOC members along with representatives of IFs, NOCs, OCOGS, athletes, the Paralympic movement and individual experts. It meets once a year.

 

  

The Games of the XXIX Olympiad – Beijing 2008 will take place from 8 to 24 August 2008. The Games in Beijing will play host to the 28 summer sports currently on the Olympic programme. Approximately 10,500 athletes are expected to participate in the Games with around 20,000 accredited media bringing the Games to the world.
